A QoS-Aware Switching Mechanism Between The Two Modes of PIM-SM Multicast Routing Protocol
نویسندگان
چکیده
PIM-SM is the only deployed intra-domain multicast routing protocol that builds both shared and source-based trees. However, it does not provide an efficient mechanism to switch between the two modes. The PIM-SM switching mechanism proposed in this paper aims to improve both network and receivers requirements. It is a coordination-based mechanism in the sense that all concerned receivers contribute to the switching decision and not only the receiver requesting the switching. Furthermore, the mechanism uses information about the temporary available network resources provided by an underlying QoS-based unicast routing protocol or using periodic switching experiments to decide when to switch between the two modes. Simulation results show that our mechanism achieves the inter-receiver switching fairness and that its integration in PIM-SM provides efficiently its original intentions.

متن کاملProtocol Independent Multicast - Sparse Mode ( PIM - SM ) Multicast
This memo describes security threats for the larger (intra-domain or inter-domain) multicast routing infrastructures. Only Protocol Independent Multicast Sparse Mode (PIM-SM) is analyzed, in its three main operational modes: the traditional Any-Source Multicast (ASM) model, the source-specific multicast (SSM) model, and the ASM model enhanced by the Embedded Rendezvous Point (Embedded-RP) group...
متن کاملMulticast Routing and Addressing
Multicast routing is necessary when multicast datagrams are to be sent to groups spanning several networks. The most popular protocol is PIM-SM because it scales well also in large networks. PIM-SM is based on shared distribution trees but also allows switching to source-rooted trees to improve performance. Multicast address allocation and assignment require some mechanism too. It can be done m...
متن کاملA QoS-Aware Multicast Routing Protocol - INFOCOM 2000. Nineteenth Annual Joint Conference of the IEEE Computer and Communications Societies
The future Internet is expected to support multicast applications with quality of service (QoS) requirements. To facilitate this, QoS multicast routing protocols are pivotal in enabling new receivers to join a multicast group. However, current routing protocols are either too restrictive in their search for a feasible path between a new receiver and the multicast tree, or burden the network wit...
متن کاملMulti-Cores Uni-Directional Shared Trees Multicast Routing Protocol
CBT and PIM-SM are two typical intradomain multicast routing protocols. However, CBT lacks efficient member management mechanism such as admission control and authentication for senders of multicast group, and PIM-SM lacks robustness. This paper proposes a ne one, which can effectively solve the both problems through admitting senders at multiple cores and transporting packets towards uni-direc...
